Coffee is one of those drinks that wakes us up in the morning and many of us make coffee at home. Every once in a while, however, or perhaps even every day, we might enjoy a special treat.

That treat often comes in the form of a stop at Starbucks for our favorite coffee drink. We stand and watch the barista prepare it in front of us and then we smile, knowing that we gave ourselves a little treat in the process.

The problem is, the treat comes with a cost but that cost may be a little less, thanks to a viral video from a Starbucks employee, Kate Mattson.

Mattson posted the video on TikTok and actually risked her job in the process. She was taking her break in one of the back rooms and even had to pause when the supervisor showed up.

In the video, she shows us how to save money on coffee and it’s absolutely brilliant.

Her first tip: “First one: The size small and the size medium has the same amount of coffee in them, it’s just the difference in the milk, so if you want the same amount of coffee, just get the small.”

She then followed it up with the second tip: “Second one: If you don’t want to pay for [flavored] syrup, just hang around at the end of the bar and be like, ‘Oh sorry, I meant to ask for syrup’ or ‘Can I make it sweeter?’ and the barista will just give you syrups, they don’t care, they won’t charge you.”

Other tips included the fact that if you order three shots they will likely give you four shots because they make them two at a time. She also advises you to be nice to the barista so you get a bigger size or other freebies.

Many people were thrilled with her advice but others gave the warning that she would likely land in hot water when her supervisors found out about the video.
