Bread and butter is the perfect combination that satisfies the soul in a way no other food does, especially when the bread is toasted. A bit crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, a piece of toast only needs a smear of salted butter. Yet getting butter to spread nice and cleanly, without ripping the bread, is a skill to some degree. Here, an unexpected kitchen utensil gives you even butter-spreading power.

Traditionally toast takes a tiny bit of foresight, that is in terms of taking the butter out of the fridge to a softened, spreadable consistency. But here you can go from cold butter to spreadable butter in a flash.

Taking the vegetable peeler, run it vertically on top of a stick of refrigerator cold butter.

Lay the thin strips on top of the warm, just-toasted bread or bagel. The paper-thin thickness of the butter will allow it to melt in a perfect, even fashion.

This hack is a great alternative to leaving butter out on the counter and prevents you from getting toast crumbs in the butter.
