We sometimes hear about people who find out they have a sibling that they didn’t know about their entire life. That is the case with Linda Hoffman, although she has been living apart from her sibling for more than 70 years.

When the 73-year-old woman discovered that she had a long-lost sister, she was more excited than words could describe. Her sister, Harriet Carter, was 76 and they met after taking a DNA test with ancestry.com.

Although they didn’t know about it until then, they did learn that their parents gave up Carter for adoption after the birth took place. Their parents were only 18 years old when she was born.

That secret was safe with them when they passed away years ago. It probably would’ve stayed a secret, if it wouldn’t have been for the DNA test.

Hoffman said that she received a message from Harriet saying that she thought they were related. She said: “We were 100% match, but our parents never told a soul, ever.”

Ever since that day the two of them have been talking on the phone daily. They weren’t able to meet in person because of the pandemic but that changed on December 7 when Carter flew from Denver to Sacramento and they met at the airport.

Hoffman was so excited at meeting her older sister that she couldn’t stop staring at her. They began looking at old photos from almost the first moment that they were together to try and gather as many of the memories as they could from years gone by.

Carter arrived at the Hoffman’s home to a special treat of Christmas decorations that were put up just for her. She absolutely loved it and although they missed many decades with each other, they are trying to make up for lost time now.
