Mariana’s viral Facebook post says, “My dad gave me this advice when I moved into my first apartment. He came out and changed the screws as soon as I moved in. A good home security tip that you may have never thought about.” She goes on to say that most contractors install the plates with the screws supplied in the package, and it turns out the standard screw is only a half inch long. Screws this length can come out with one good kick from a burglar.
Mariana’s dad installed 4-inch screws in place of the half inch screws. This means that the screws went through the door frame and into the framing of the house. Burglars can kick for a long time, but the nails won’t budge. Her post ends with, “Making a burglar make a bunch of noise and be foiled in their initial plan can not only give you time to arm yourself but they will most likely move on to an easier target.”
