Chocolate Cosmo Flowers Smell Like Red Velvet Cake

Giving somebody a gift often involves either selecting something pretty or something sweet. If you have difficulty choosing between the two, you may want to try giving this little flower a try. Not only is it as beautiful as a red velvet cake, it smells like chocolate.

The flower, which is known as a chocolate cosmos, is similar to a daisy and can be found in Mexico. When seeds were sent to the UK in the mid-1800s, however, they started to be grown in that location and it spread elsewhere. Today, you can find them growing in warm climates in zone 7 or above. Even those who live in a milder area can grow a chocolate cosmos in a container inside when the weather gets too cold.

The burgundy petals of the flower are pleasing to the eyes and the beautiful brown centers put you instantly in the mood for chocolate. Perhaps what is even more interesting is that these flowers bloom at night.

The beauty of the plant is one reason why people love it, but the dark chocolate fragrance and just a little touch of vanilla are also adding to their popularity. When you combine the colors with the scents, it will definitely bring to mind a red velvet cake.

When grown in the proper climates, the perennials will bloom for years upon years. If they are exposed to full sunlight, they can grow up to 30 inches tall. Just remember to bring them inside if it is going to be too cold outside and they will do just fine.

If you would like to try your hand at growing the chocolate cosmos, you will need to start a new plant from roots with signs of growth on them. Once you get them started, you can deadhead the flowers to produce additional blossoms and separate them every few years to create even more for your own garden or to share.
