Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

As a kid, the worst part of my day was getting in the car at 7:45 and starting the 10-minute drive to school. Not only was I having to go to school rather than staying at home, but it meant that I had to say bye to my pets for the day. Being away from your furry best friends can always be hard.

But there is one sneaky three-year-old girl who came up with an ingenious solution to smuggle her best friend into class with her. The young girl, Peyton, put her fish, Mermaid, into a sippy cup and took her to school!

It was a smart plan, but sadly for Peyton, she got found out at school after her teacher noticed that there was something swimming around the bottom of her water bottle.

Peyton’s mom, Lauren, was called by the school and informed about the incident. Lauren then just had to share the funny moment with her cousin, Connor, who had just gotten married and was thinking about kids.

Needless to say, the funny exchange made him think twice about parenthood and it made him want to share the photo of Peyton, plus his text exchange with Lauren on Twitter so the rest of the internet could share in the laugh.

Check out the tweet:

Alongside screenshots of his conversation, Connor shared, “Having recently gotten married,@BrieHughes3 & I have started the discussion on having children. I received this text message from my cousin today and I’m not sure we’re ready.”

The tweet was well-received. But the one thing that everyone wanted to know was what happened with Mermaid? Well, the fish was fine and made it home after an adventurous day in school. But the thing that gave Peyton away was when she took a sip from the fish-filled water bottle at snack time, having forgotten that Mermaid was in there.

The internet was quite impressed with how well-planned Peyton went about taking Mermaid to school with her. According to Buzzfeed, not only had she filled a water bottle for Mermaid, but she also gave her some food in that water bottle before leaving for school. She even duct-taped the top in order to prevent spills or leaks! With all that effort, her mom admitted that she “couldn’t be mad at her.”

Regardless, it doesn’t look like there will be any more fishy adventures for these two friends any time soon!
