University Displays Hundreds Of Carved Pumpkins To Celebrate Halloween
Carving pumpkins is a Halloween tradition, and if you’re like me, you don’t just carve one for your front porch. I prefer carving a couple to display outside.
But even if you have four or five pumpkins set out as a display, it doesn’t compare to the pumpkin display that was put up at the “Old Morrison Steps” in Lexington, Kentucky.

In fact, it is quite the display, with hundreds of Jack-O-Lanterns lighting up the night during the 12th Annual PumpkinMania Festival at Transylvania University.
The official lighting of the pumpkins happened every night from October 23 through October 27, 2022. Once the pumpkin lighting was over on the 27th, the pumpkins didn’t go to waste. Instead, they were collected by local farmers in order to be turned into feed for their animals.

By the 28th, most of the pumpkins were picked up by local farmers and repurposed. However, some that remained were then transported to McConnell Springs in order to light up Lexington’s Jack-o’-lantern Trail.
Naturally, this means that the display won’t be around as long, but the reason is that they are trying to be able to recycle the pumpkins before they go bad. As explained in the video below:, “While this means the display won’t be up through Halloween this year, recycling the pumpkins before they’re unusable is in line with the university’s commitment to sustainability.”

All the carved pumpkins were given to the university by Black Soil, which is an organization that focuses on connecting black farmers living in Kentucky with their agricultural roots.
As shared, “The mission of Black Soil: Our Better Nature is to reconnect black Kentuckians to their legacy and heritage in agriculture. By bringing together urban families with rural and urban-based black farmers/growers/producers across the state, we help introduce opportunities in agriculture that promote self-sufficiency, encourage healthy living, and activate cooperative economics.”
