Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Anyone who watches pro football on a regular basis has probably asked themselves, “How much does the water boy get paid?”

We definitely find ourselves wondering how much money all of the ancillary staff members on an NFL team make. It’s the sort of job that any of us could have, so it is only natural to ponder on how much they are able to earn.

Now, we are finally receiving an answer to this question. Fortunately for our readers, we were able to go straight to the source on this one.

Jake Thieneman (who goes by @jake.thieneman on TikTok) is here to remove all of the mystery from the equation. This TikTok, which has gone viral of course, offers us the chance to get to the bottom of this common query.

Jake loves to share tidbits about his time in the league, falling in line with many other TikTok users who are more than happy to tell us about the hidden aspects of their jobs. We could hardly believe our ears when he told us how much the water boys make each year. Did you know that they are paid roughly $53,000 every year?

This comes as quite a shock to us, to be honest. We had no idea they were so well compensated for their time. Jake was quick to share some additional context, though. These numbers can vary depending on the team and the experience level of the applicant. Jake is also quick to explain that this job is more complicated than it may seem from the outside looking in.

“Now, there’s a misconception that these people just hand out water and towels,” he says. “These are trainers on the athletic training staff. Most of them have athletic training degrees or [physical therapy] degrees and are learning the craft of treating players’ injuries and helping guys stay healthy.”

In other words, landing the job is not as simple as putting in an application. You will need to have certain experiences that are sure to help you when it comes to assisting these finely tuned athletic machines. From there, an interesting debate emerged on the platform about whether this was enough money for those who have degrees in physical therapy.
