I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love puppy chow. Growing up in the midwest, this indulgent treat was at every bake sale and church function. And typically the first thing cleaned out! If you aren’t familiar with this treat, it’s typically made with Chex cereal that is coated with a chocolate-peanut butter mixture, then dusted with powdered sugar. It may not sound like much, but trust me… it’s heavenly. I’m always on the hunt for new variations so when I saw this Cheerio version, I knew I had to give it a go!
The recipe sticks pretty darn close to the original, except for subbing in class Cheerios for the Chex. The substitution definitely gives the final result a different texture, one that you just might love! The oat-based Cheerios have a more subtle crunch and a nuttier flavor.
This treat is bound to make you the most popular person at any party or get-together. It’s easily made ahead of time, but make sure to seal it up in an airtight container once it’s cool so it maintains its crunch. Give this Cheerio version a try the next time you need a sweet treat and you’re sure to love it!
