If you are someone who regularly purchases Great Value items from Walmart, this is a story that you are going to want to pay very close attention to. Otherwise, you may be placing yourself at risk.

When this TikTok user spotted a very bizarre warning on a Great Value label during a Wal-Mart run, they were nice enough to take a moment to share it with the rest of us.

Now, people from all over the country are racing to their kitchens to see if they have any items like these in their homes. Paden Ferguson (who goes by @padiano on TikTok) is the one who is responsible for sharing these revelations. He’s gotten over 5 million views, as everyone looks to get to the bottom of this very troubling find that he has made.

The video has raised a ton of eyebrows, as it should have. This man noticed the strange warning when he decided to purchase a bag of mini marshmallows that had the Great Value packaging. “Hey, when was the last time we checked in on Great Value brand at Walmart? Because I have some concerns,” he said and rightfully so. At first, everything seems normal enough.

Once the bag has been flipped over, this is where things started to take a very disturbing turn. The warning is extremely unusual, to say the least. “MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF TILAPIA,” the warning reads. “CONTAINS A BIOENGINEERED FOOD INGREDIENT.” For those who have fish allergies, this is something that they probably would have wanted to know ahead of time.

While there is a warning on the bag, we believe that it should be a bit more prominent. “Why? What?” Paden asks. The comments were also full of incredulous viewers who simply wanted to know why.

“not my bf being deathly allergic to talapia thanks for the heads up,” one viewer wrote. “as a vegetarian….I will be double checking the ingredients from now on,” said another. Of course, marshmallows are rarely ever vegetarian because they’re made from gelatin which comes from animal parts.

As it turns out, it could be that gelatin is the reason for the tilapia warning. While gelatin is commonly made by killing cows or pigs, using fish gelatin allows a product to be kosher.

The Kosher Without Compromise website explains, “The most common kosher gelatin which is used is marine gelatin (fish), as the skins and scales of fish contain relatively large amounts of collagen. This is easier from a kosher perspective since fish do not have to be halachically slaughtered.”

If you have a serious allergy of any kind, it’s always smart to double-check all food labels, even if it’s something you wouldn’t expect to contain the allergen.
