Although we may all have our favorite type of cookware, there is going to be some time in our life when we use cast iron. It is more than just a classic type of cookware, it is a heritage and The Lodge Company has been bringing it to us for more than 120 years.

It got its start when the BlackRock Foundry was established in South Pittsburgh, Tennessee in 1896. The cast-iron cookware was used by many at that time, but most of it could have easily have fit in a kitchen cupboard.

There was one piece of cookware that they made, however, that was a little on the large side. In fact, it recently went on a road trip and if you happened to be traveling on I-59 in Tennessee on January 12, you would have seen something quite unusual.

It was a cast-iron skillet that measures 18 feet from one end to the other and weighs in at 14,360 pounds. It had been loaded on the back of a truck and was on its way to its new location while being transported through Tennessee.

According to an official tweet by the Log Cast-Iron: “If you were driving down I59 yesterday, you might have seen something special headed north. If you were driving down I59 yesterday, you might have seen something special headed north.”

If you happen to be a fan of cast iron, you might appreciate the new Log Cast Iron Museum, which is slated to open up in the summer of 2022. You will be able to see this extra-large cast-iron skillet, along with learning more about the history and manufacturing of cast-iron products.

The extra-large skillet will only be one of the attractions at the museum. You can also check out a rare collection of cast iron and hear people tell the stories associated with them.

In a statement on their website, the CEO and president, Mike Otterman had the following to say: “In 2021 we celebrated 125 years of Lodge Cast Iron, and as we look ahead to 2022 and the next 125 years, we’re thrilled to be bringing the Lodge Cast Iron Museum to South Pittsburg. Covering everything from the history of cast iron to how it’s used today, the museum is an exciting opportunity to celebrate our community and share Lodge with the world through this unmatched experience.”
