The Winter Olympics are in full swing, and taking home her first silver medal in figure skating was Karen Chen for Team USA!

While her routine out on the ice was impressive, perhaps the most heartwarming part of her performance was knowing that the outfit she wore was actually made by her mom! She showed off the dress in a post on Instagram:

On the Team USA’s Instagram account, she showed off the dress in more detail and it is so pretty up close.

The dress that her mother made is custom designed and consisted of a long-sleeved lavender dress that had a very detailed, plunging V-neckline that was decorated by crystal butterflies and flowers. It was definitely befitting of a champion. And Chen nailed it on the ice in her performance despite having triggered an old ankle injury while warming up prior to the skating even.

In the video on social media, Chen showed off her mother’s design saying, “I’m wearing my figure skating dress that my mom [Hsiu-Hui Tseng] actually made for me. She probably does 90 percent of the work and I do like 10 percent and by 10 percent I just tell her like, ‘Oh that looks good.’ ”

Chen added that her mother “does all the hard work, and she puts like… blood, sweat, and tears into it” – a statement quite evident by the intricacy and stunning detail of the crystalized patterns on the front of the skater dress.

The time and effort that went into all those small details is absolutely mind-blowing. Chen then shared that the favorite part of the dress was actually the crystal butterflies. She revealed that they were a nod to the song that Chen skated to during the event.

She said, “I think my favorite part is this butterfly down here, she like strategically picked the stones and arranged them in a way so it looks like a butterfly because my free program I’m skating to a ‘Butterfly Lovers’ ConcerThe deto’ and so I just want to be a pretty butterfly on the ice.”

After seeing her performance on the ice, there is no doubt that she managed to capture that graceful essence of a butterfly. Well done, Karen Chen!
