Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

The holiday season serves as a sobering reminder that there are many people out there who are currently walking down a very tough path.

Even some of our favorite celebrities are not immune. This latest update from Joanna Gaines is proof of that. It does not matter how hard we try, there are always issues that will arise at the worst possible moment and derail our best-laid plans.

Gaines did not expect that she would be spending the holidays laying around but life had other ideas for her. The timing is not convenient for her but she accepts that she could use the break from all of the typical holiday hustle and bustle. Her recent Instagram post provided an honest and unvarnished view of her current situation.

Her holidays are looking rough, as she took a photo from her hospital bed. She seems to be in good spirits and even flashed a peace sign. That does not mean that everything is all good, though. She also shared a photo where she was laid up at home and an additional picture of her Christmas tree. There is a message in there, a very important one for those who wish to take heed.

“I hurt my back in high school from cheerleading- basically a basket toss turned back injury and I’ve been dealing with it ever since,” she began in the post. From there, she explained that she had to undergo surgery recently. Two weeks ago, she had to have a microdisectomy. It is not the first time that she had to have back surgery, either. This is the second time that she has had this particular surgery.

In fact, she was even forced to cancel her second date with her husband Chip because of the procedure. That’s probably why she has been able to keep a smile on her face, despite everything that she is going through. No matter what happens to us, better times are always going to be right around the corner.

“I’m truly grateful for the forced rest during the busiest time of the year. It has been a gift to simply stay put, stare at the wonder all around, and just be still,” Joanna wrote.

This is a great lesson for all of us to take into the new year as well. As long as we have our health and our loved ones, nothing else matters.
