Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

A flight attendant has taken to TikTok to share inside industry secrets, and apparently, there are some hacks to get upgraded to first-class for free when you fly!

The flight attendant, TikTok user @cierra_mistt, explained that while the hacks are not guaranteed to land you a free, first-class ticket, airlines do give them out and there are ways to improve your chances of securing one.

We’re not going to lie, getting a free first-class upgrade is one of our ultimate fantasies. Who wouldn’t love to munch on warm cookies and drink champagne while enjoying all of the legroom that economy class doesn’t provide?

This is a rhetorical question, but you get where we are going with this. We have seen the luxury class living it up too many times not to want to join in. The decadent meals that they get to enjoy up there are reason enough.

“One way to get a free upgrade is literally just being nice to your gate agent and flight attendant,” she shares. “The miracles we can work when we’re given some Starbucks and a bag of chocolates,” she continued. These workers do not always get to take breaks, and treats like these go a very long way as a result.

Additionally, if you grab a seat on an empty flight, you might be in luck. “Normally, if our flight isn’t full we’ll have to move people for weight and balance purposes,” Mistt shares. “That being said, normally all aircraft are tail-heavy. So if we have to move people up to the front, where do you think we’re gonna take them from? The back,” Cierra advises.

As for the third hack, this one might not work as well. Cierra warns that success may vary here, depending on the airline. “The majority of airlines are booking every single flight that they have,” she says. “If everyone does show up, including the extra passengers that were oversold their tickets, the airlines have no choice but to financially compensate.”

Instead of accepting a $500 voucher, Cierra says that you need to be asking for cash. “But depending on the flight and how desperate they are, they will go up to $3,000, $4,000, $5,000,” she offers.
