At first glance this might seem like one of those dodgy vintage recipes that would be more to your grandmother’s taste than your own. It might seem like it belongs among the other ‘70s memories, with the harvest gold wallpaper, itchy couches, and crocheted sweater vests. But, if you love tomatoes and tomato soup then this Hot Buttered Tomato Juice will be just the thing to warm you up this winter and it only takes a few ingredients and about 10 minutes to make.

If you don’t mind drinking your veggies then you will enjoy this drink. This hot version of tomato juice reminds me of an Italian tomato soup, seasoned with just the right amount of oregano. And, served in a mug it’s as convenient as it is tasty.

Speaking of tomato soup some grilled cheese or open-faced toasted cheese sandwiches would be the perfect side kick to this hot drink- and heaps easier to eat with a sandwich. Just take a bite and then take a sip! I could see this being a fun family dinner or snack some frosty night in the near future. In honor of this I had to get out the portable fireplace for the photos. It’s so cozy to have a hot drink by the fire!

This drink would be nice with some white pepper or a dash of Tabasco sauce if you were craving a bit of a spicier drink. To make this healthier you could reduce the amount of butter if you want, but I think it adds a rich, silky finish to this concoction that makes it feel like a real treat.

Cold nights call for warming drinks and this one certainly hits the spot. Many tastes may have changed since this recipe was first published in the 1970s, but the flavors of tomato and oregano, with just a hint of rich butter, is a combo that stands the test of time. This was a fun experiment that struck gold for me – hopefully it will for you as well.
