Did you know that there’s an official day to celebrate French fries? July 13th is the day to honor those thin slices of potato we all know and love as the “french fry.” The average American eats close to 30 pounds of french fries each year! If that’s not a sign of our love affair with french fries, I don’t know what is. Those salty strips of potato, fried to a golden crisp in oil, are impossible to resist. From burgers to battered and fried fish, the French fry is the perfect sidekick to some of our favorite foods.
There are a wide variety of cuts to french fries too; there are shoestring French fries, crinkle-cut, curly fries, and wedges, to name a few. One essential accessory to the French fry is a dipping sauce. A classic sauce is obviously ketchup, but mustard, mayonnaise, and even vinegar are delicious pairings with a serving of French fries. We’ve had a bunch of different fry sauces, one of our favorites is our own Boom Boom Fry Sauce; it has a nice kick from a bit of sriracha added into the sauce.
We’re here today, though, to talk about “fry sauce.” It may sound a bit generic, but it’s truly anything but plain, and we think it’s the best way to fuse all of our favorite French fry dipping sauces into one amazing dip. It’s got all the usual suspects: ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise, and to it, we add brown sugar, minced dill pickles, and a little apple cider vinegar. We like the brown sugar here – it doesn’t make a huge impact on the flavor, but just enough of subtle savory-sweetness that makes you say “mm-mmm.” We mix all of this together and let it sit in the refrigerator for a bit so all of those flavors have time to come together and become even more delicious.
This fry sauce is also great served on a burger, so we’ve made a big batch of it here; just store any leftovers in an airtight container. But don’t really expect to have much leftover! Given how much we love french fries, it’s no surprise that there’s a day to honor the glorious french fry. This irresistible potato snack is can be enjoyed as simple or as elaborate as suits each of our individual tastes. Homemade French Fry Sauce
Serves 10-15 servings
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 3-4 dill pickles
- 1 tablespoon mustard (dijon or yellow)
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
- Whisk mayonnaise and ketchup together. Set aside.
- Finely chop the dill pickles and add to the ketchup mixture along with the mustard. Whisk again to combine.
- Season with garlic salt, pepper, sugar, and vinegar. Whisk again until the mixture is well blended.
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or until ready to serve. Stir again before serving. Enjoy!
