Most people have heard of tiny homes but have you heard of granny pods? Don’t feel bad if it is a new term for you because they are relatively new on the scene. They are actually a type of tiny home that is put in the backyards of the children of seniors so that aging parents can continue to live independently but be close to those who can care for their needs.

The latest real estate trend is the “granny pod” or “Mother in law cottage” which is a small home 🏡 located on an adult child’s property. There have been a number of nice granny pods that I’ve seen, but I think this one is the best yet. 66-year-old Meredith Stannard lives with her partner, 69-year-old Elyse Zandonella in a 613 ft.² cottage. Their cottage is located in the backyard of their daughter and son-in-law’s property. In order to travel more frequently, live comfortably, and spend the summers in Cape Cod, they decided to eliminate their mortgage.

Meredith and Elyse live in this cute little two-story cottage that has a bedroom upstairs, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, and furniture that was made to fit. In order to move into the new home and downsize, they sold most of their possessions but they feel it was worth it. Now that the daughter and son-in-law are expecting a child, Meredith and Elyse are more than happy to be close by.

You might feel as if living in your child’s backyard is not the best situation, but granny pods have many benefits for everyone in the family. The seniors love the living arrangements and you can tell that they are more than willing to make this home for many years.
