Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

If you are the type of person who likes to charge your phone during the night, this firefighter is here to provide you with a very important warning.

This is a more dangerous activity than most of us realize and this TikTok video is a must-see for anyone who engages in this practice. The clip comes to us courtesy of the good folks at England’s Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

We had no idea that this could be so dangerous, so we are beyond grateful for any tips and pointers that we are offered.

“This is a highly debated topic on our TikTok, but if you ARE able to do so, it’s much safer to charge any electrical items when you’re there and awake,” the clip begins. That’s not all that they had to say on this very important matter, though.

“We get a lot of questions here at Kent Fire & Rescue about why you shouldn’t charge phones overnight,” the fire expert warned viewers at home. “So here are the reasons why. Number one: You can’t smell anything when you’re asleep, so if it starts to burn, the fire won’t wake you up,” he says. “Number two: it only takes three breaths of smoke to knock you unconscious.”

He blames “cheap and faulty” phone chargers for the issues, although “genuine” chargers can cause the same issues.

No matter which type of charger you are using, they have all been known to start fires, so bear that in mind before you start to believe that you are an exception to the rule.

“If you’re able to, we advise you to charge your phone when you’re there and awake,” he adds. “From a fire service point of view, it’s much safer.”

Of course, someone had to be the one to offer a dissenting comment, making a snarky remark about how they are going to be charging their phone while they are asleep anyway.

“We’d advise you didn’t, but we can’t enforce anything. All we can do is share advice based on real incidents. We always hope you’ll never need us,” the fire expert shot back.
