When it comes to hairstyles, the phrase “one size fits all” does not actually apply. You’ll need to make sure that you are choosing the hairstyle that actually aligns with the shape of your face. Once you have decided that you are ready to switch things up a bit, this guide from hairstylist Leo Bancroft is here to help. Let’s take a closer look at the five most common facial structures and the hairstyles that work best:

Heart Shape

Top knots and bangs are flattering to this facial shape. Those who have heart-shaped faces will have a head that is wider at the top before coming to a point at their chin. If you have a heart-shaped face, the hair should drape around the chin or below it.

Square Shape

Bobs and fringe bangs are the best choices for anyone who is looking to flatter a square shape face. Those who have square shape faces have strong angles to consider and Bancroft recommends softening these features. Layers and length are also recommended by Bancroft in these instances.

Round Shape

According to Leo, those who have round faces are considered to have a youthful appearance, so there is no need to worry. While there are some who may rely on circular coifs that are perched at the top of the head, Leo does not recommend it. Instead, he believes that round shaped faces are better off with a cut that offers a longer length near the chin. Side-swept bangs will also work wonders.

Long Faces

These features are not as wide as the oval (we’ll get to them in a moment). These faces are more narrow once you reach the chin. Fringe bangs are recommended by Bancroft again so that the face will appear a bit wider. Don’t go for flat, long styles. They simply make the face look even longer. Curls, waves, and layers are your best bet. They’ll give the hair shape and soften your angles.

Oval Shape

These faces have the easiest time when it comes to choosing hairstyles. Leo Bancroft praises the oval shape’s versatility and balance. Are you looking to neutralize some of the face’s sharper points or would you rather emphasize the facial structure? This is a decision that will guide you going forward. Some hairstyles offer more definition and others soften the face, so the choice is yours!
