Wine gurus are some of the coolest people that we have ever had the chance to hang out with. They are able to add the necessary context to our favorite wines and put us onto things that we never would have considered otherwise.

That’s part of the charm. We also love to see them putting their expertise to the test and that’s where this video comes into play.

Konstantin Baum was recently given an amazing opportunity, as he opened and tasted a 159-year-old Burmester port wine.

If you are anything like us, you are insanely jealous. This wine was bottled way back in 1863, making this the sort of video that you are simply not going to see every day. It’s not like bottles this aged are being opened by the common folk all the time!

All jokes aside, you do not even need to be a wine lover to appreciate this one. Before Baun was actually able to open the wine, he took a moment to appreciate the age of the bottle and he even took stock of the time period when it was bottled.

“Think about what the wine must have seen over the years. In 1863 Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves in US confederate states, it was also the year the Football Association formed in England and the year the International Committee of the Red Cross was established and the year Rockefeller started the oil business that would make him the richest man in the world,” he explains in the video below.

This wine bottle has been through a very interesting journey over the years and anyone who would like to receive some valuable context should definitely check out what Baum has to say on these matters.

The bottle’s unusual shape also made it difficult for Baum to open. Was he able to get the bottle open without crumbling the cork? You will simply have to watch the video and find out for yourself!

“Burmester Port was a revelation. 159 years later the wine still showed beautifully. The color: Tawny with some red hues. On the nose complex, with notes of figs, raisins, walnuts, soy sauce. To complex to explain,” he shares.
