Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

When you think of hot dogs and ice cream, you normally think about an afternoon spent at the ol’ ball game where our guilty pleasure is to stuff our faces with these two delicacies…just not together in the one bite.

However, yesterday August 12th, in honor of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, Oscar Mayer did the unthinkable and partnered with New York City-based Il Laboratorio Del Gelato to bring us one ungodly creation of the Ice Dog Sandwich. It was the food experience that nobody asked for.

According to Delish, the dish featured a “Spicy Dijon Mustard gelato and candied hot dog pieces,” stuck in between two cookie “buns”. And according to Thrillist, for this entire week following, it is rumored that Oscar Meyer’s famous “weinermobile” will be roaming the streets of New York “passing out Ice Dog Sandwiches for any interested New Yorkers who dare take on a hot dog-flavored ice cream.”

While the idea of a hot dog ice cream sandwich sounds absolutely bizarre, a social media post that promoted the new dish, proved that there was a solid reason behind the decision. Oscar Meyer claimed that the concept was influenced by the condiment company French’s, and their bold move last week to release their own mustard ice cream.

Oscar Mayer posted to Twitter, “who eats just mustard @Frenchs? Condiments were made for Oscar Mayer hot dogs. Say hello to the Oscar Mayer Ice Dog Sandwich-flavored ice cream, made with our better hot dogs, sandwiched with spicy mustard.”

Another learning moment for everyone: don’t give into peer pressure when it comes to bad decisions. Hopefully these hot dog ice cream sandwiches aren’t here to stay.
