When Jared Veldheer retired from being an offensive tackle in the NFL, no one was certain what his next move might be. After making millions playing his sport over the past 11 years, it’s likely that he had a lot of options of what to do with his time.

Some retired NFL players go on to start businesses, others take up sales jobs, and some just stay in retirement. But Veldheer wanted to do something meaningful with his time, and that’s when he saw an opening in the school cafeteria at his kids’ school.

The father of two applied for the position with Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic School in Grand Rapids, MI, and was quickly selected for the job, which boasted a starting pay of $15.00 per hour.

Since starting in the cafeteria, Veldheer has actually made some noticeable improvements to the food. It seems Veldheer has a passion for cooking and food, and he’s using his skills to introduce new flavors to the students!

In an interview with 13 On Your Side, the school’s principle, Michelle Morrow, said, “They are seeing things on the menu like beef bulgogi and tikka masala.”

Speaking with the outlet, Veldheer said, “I was looking for something to do time-wise and with the vacancy here, I figured I’d give it a go.”

He added that it’s similar to the NFL in some ways. He said, “You know, you have your day-to-day goals. We start prepping. Go through the prep process. First group starts at 11.”

As you can imagine, many of the kids are quite impressed to have a former NFL star as their new lunch lady!
