When Business Insider producer Lauren Shamo took the time to visit with craftsman Kotaro Nishibori, they came together to show the audience more about how traditional Japanese paper umbrellas (Wagasa) are created.

Nishibori is more than happy to guide viewers through their creative process. These umbrellas are made with traditional materials and tools, making this process an absolute must-watch for anyone who ever wanted to learn more.

“Nishibori stays true to the 1,200-year-old process by using traditional methods and materials, including bamboo and washi,” the description reads. Anyone who would like to develop an even greater appreciation for his handiwork should take the time to follow his Instagram page as well. The work that he does is absolutely spellbinding. You won’t be able to take your eyes off his awesome videos.

After growing up in Japan and learning English at a young age, he moved to Canada for two years. It wasn’t long before he realized that he did not know enough about his origin country. That’s when he decided that it was time to move back. From there, he met his wife, whose family owned the wagasa company Hyoshiya. This is the connection that would forever change his life.

He found his calling and he has spent the last 25 years of his life crafting these incredible umbrellas. “Somehow it’s connected to me. This is something that I was looking for. And this is something really valued in Japanese cultures. In the Japanese craft world, nobody says ‘I’m master.’ Master cannot be beat, even if you stay your whole life. Master is symbolic…I can say I am a craftsman, a professional craftsman,” he says in the video below.

If you haven’t done so yet, this is the perfect chance to take a closer look at all of his marvelous creations. These are some of the coolest umbrellas that we have ever seen and it is so hard to decide on a favorite. This is one man who has definitely found his true calling and we are beyond happy for him.
