Everything that is old will always come back around again. If you are old enough, you will actually see the cycles taking place and it is a fascinating occurrence. Those who spend a lot of time on TikTok have probably seen the “cowboy caviar” trend taking over.

If you click the hashtag, you are going to see no shortage of posts. In fact, the hashtag has already garnered over 10 billion views.

While this may be a relatively new addition to our rotations, it is a dish that has actually existed for quite some time now. It has been around since the 1940s and was initially known as Texas caviar. It serves as the Southern take on salsa and bean salad and it is called “cowboy caviar” because the black-eyed peas bear such a close resemblance.

According to Texas Monthly, Helen Corbitt, a cookbook author who used to serve as the head chef for Neiman Marcus, is responsible for creating the dish. She was instructed to use Texas ingredients only and this was the end result. Now, the world of TikTok is getting in on the act. Of course, they are making their own substitutions when it comes to these ingredients.

Bria Lemirande is leading this charge, as she has provided numerous versions of this popular dip.

She’s gotten over 12 million views for her creations and many are embracing her spin on this common southern dish. If you would like to make the classic version, you will need black-eyed peas, tomatoes, bell peppers, and onions. Vinaigrette is also used to dress the onions.

The newer versions will typically include fruits, legumes, and cheeses. We love this recipe because there are no limits to what you can include. The only limits in these instances are the ones that we make for ourselves.

Meanwhile, there are those who find themselves wondering what they can do if they find themselves pressed for time. Trader Joe’s has definitely got you covered! You can stop by any time you like and take home your very own store-bought version.
