Australia Has Been Crowned “The Drunkest Country” On Planet Earth

It really doesn’t matter what country you happen to be in, if alcohol is available, there are going to be those who enjoy consuming it. Of course, somebody has to be the leader when it comes to drinking the most alcohol and Australia seems to have come out on top.

The Global Drug Survey took a poll from 22 different countries and asked about 32,000 people to monitor their alcohol consumption. The survey took place in 2020 and what came out of it was a snapshot of how much people drink worldwide.

In Australia, people managed to tie one on about 27 times in 2020. On average, people in other countries got drunk about 15 times that year.

Australia also seemed to be a heavyweight in other categories. They drink twice per week but only got intoxicated every other week.

Another fact that was perhaps unexpected is that Australian women drank more often than their male counterparts. Who knew?

Of course, we did have the pandemic during 2020, and that may have skewed the numbers to a certain extent. For the most part, there were not many lockdowns in Australia in 2020 so it’s perhaps they just had the opportunity to drink more often. After all, their bars and clubs stayed open for much of the year.

According to a report in The Latch, one of the researchers, Dr. Monica Barratt, said of the few lockdowns: “This may have something to do with Australia being the highest-ranked country for frequency of getting drunk.”

At this point, you are probably wondering who came in second place. That honor goes to Finland and Denmark, as those who took the survey got drunk about 24 times every year.

The United States managed to hold onto third place with the average survey participant getting drunk 23 times during 2020, and the UK, 22.5 times. Canada was trailing at 22.
