If you happen to be somebody that enjoys trying unusual beers, you will appreciate what one French brewer has done. They are now using a type of algae to brew blue beer naturally.

The beer, which is sold at the Hoppe Urban Brew, is called “Line” and the algae that is used to brew it is also becoming popular as a type of dietary supplement.

The craft brewery decided to pick up on its popularity to make a beer and they wanted to make something unusual.

According to the New York Post, Sebastien Verbeke, an employee at Hoppe Urban Brew, said people are loving it primarily for the curiosity factor.

The algae, known as spirulina, is being grown in Northern France by a company named Etika Spirulina. It is the phycocyanin in the spirulina that produces the blue color and it’s added to the beer while it is brewing.

The New York Post says the beer is described by a brewery employee as being hoppy, light, and having fruity notes. They claim that the blue color is the only indication that it has algae in it.

Between October and December, some 1,500 bottles were sold. The brewery is hoping to make many more sales in 2022.
