Woolworth’s Ham Salad
A classic ham salad with simple ingredients and big flavor.
Woolworth’s food has been remembered by those who loved their simple, but delicious lunches. These were not huge meals full of fancy ingredients. Instead many of their most-ordered dishes had minimal ingredients with great flavor. Their ham salad was a favorite of many a Woolworth’s shopper and to make it you only need 6 ingredients, not counting the bread to serve it on.
The first step to this famous ham salad is to finely dice the ham instead of grinding it or using a food processor. This by-hand technique gives it the proper texture.
The next thing is to combine the chopped ham with the dressing, which in this case is Miracle Whip. There are lots of folks who maintain that it just doesn’t taste the same if you use mayonnaise.
While it’s not my go-to for something like a turkey sandwich or tuna salad, the Miracle Whip here adds just a touch of sweetness which is a signature of this lunch counter ham salad spread.
To serve it up the old fashioned way toast 3 slices of wheat bread to make a double decker.
Slice the sandwich in half diagonally and serve with your favorite potato chips and a pickle spear to get that diner plate lunch that so many remember fondly. Or spread this tasty Woolworth’s ham salad over crackers for a great snack!
