Life on the streets is hard for a dog, especially during winter. It’s definitely no place for a mama to have her puppies, but that’s the path Skittles was on.
She was living as a stray on the streets of St. Louis, Missouri, and happened to be very pregnant. Thankfully, the sweet pit bull was picked up by a kind stranger and taken to Gateway Pet Guardians.
During a medical examination, they were able to confirm her pregnancy: She had 7 puppies in there!
While rescuers noticed Skittles was a little nervous at the shelter, they were determined to give her the best life ever, starting with a proper pampering.
To showcase just how beautiful and majestic Skittles was, the rescue set up a maternity photoshoot and the result is so sweet! Skittles sported beautiful red tule in front of a gorgeous backdrop.
Despite the commotion of the photoshoot, the very pregnant mama dog was so tired, she could barely keep her eyes awake!

After the shoot, Skittles went home with a foster family and ended up having her puppies a week later! The rescue shared that she had six healthy babies, and one was sadly stillborn.
Even sadder still, they added a later update that two of the healthy pups had passed away.
Despite her losses, Skittles ended up being an excellent mama and her puppies will all go to loving forever homes when they’re old enough.
