When you want a steak dinner but don’t want to spend like you’re having a steak dinner, hamburger steaks are the answer. Hamburger Steaks have a long history as an economical meal, and for good reason. When you skip the bun and elevate it with the right seasoning, ground beef can seem like a special occasion meal, particularly when you pair it with mushrooms and onions like we’ve done here. These Sheet Pan Hamburger Steaks are super easy to prepare — you only need your oven and a baking sheet — but make for a main dish that feels maybe even a little fancy even though it sure won’t break the bank.

This is a situation where you’re definitely going to want to line your baking sheet with foil to make clean up an easier process. (Things get juicy here.)

You need one onion and a pound of portabella mushrooms, both sliced. You’ll arrange all those slices on a pan, then sprinkle them with some thyme, salt, and pepper, a drizzle of olive oil and top it off with eight beef patties.

You want to season the outside of the patties after they’ve been formed to get the juiciest results. Stick that whole sheet pan in the oven and bake for twenty minutes and your work is just about done.

The last step is to place a pat of butter on the top of each patty after this comes out of the oven. There’s no sauce here, just the co-mingling of juices from the beef, onions, and mushrooms, and the butter really takes things up a notch.
