News reporters have a very important job of bringing us the news from wherever they are. Whatever the story may be, reporters have to remain calm and collected while on air.

No one did this better than Tori Yorgey, who maintained her composure after getting hit by a car while on air! It’s not every day that a reporter finds themself being the subject of a news piece, but that is what happened to Tori as she was live on air.

Tori has been working as a news reporter at WSAZ for three years. She’s an MMJ, also known as a multimedia journalist, meaning she is a jack of all trades. When she reports on a story, she’s not just in front of the camera, but behind it as well since she is her own videographer.

This means that when she is covering a story, she’s covering it alone and there is no one around in case something goes wrong.

Because of this, there has been a fair amount of concern raised over the potential safety issues surrounding MMJs – particularly females at night time. This concern was raised once again after people witnessed the incident with Tori.

After Tori’s accident with the car, one CNN Correspondent Dianne Gallagher tweeted, “STOP SENDING REPORTERS OUT ALONE TO RUN THEIR OWN LIVE SHOTS. Especially in the dark. Especially on the side of the road. Especially in severe weather. But really, in any circumstance, it’s unsafe and unfair to the journalist AND community.”

We can completely understand that safety concern after seeing what happened to Tori. She had just set up her camera and was busy talking about a break in a water main when a car appeared in the frame and hit the journalist.

While the video is quite shocking and startling, the good news is that Tori was fine afterward and there was no major damage done. More than anything, she was just shaken up. Granted, everyone wanted to know what happened.

Following the incident, Tori shared that she wasn’t in the road when she got hit. Instead, she was off to the side of the pavement, trying to stay out of the way of the water company workers as she did her story. She was on the curb in the driveway of an apartment complex, a place she thought she was safe to stand as there was still lots of room for cars to come and go.

Tori also noted that the driver was very, very apologetic about the accident. She figures that perhaps the driver was distracted by the emergency lights and just didn’t see her as she pulled into the complex.

Whatever the reason for the accident, at least she was fine. But this wasn’t her first brush with a bump from a car. As Tori shared in her interview below, she was also hit by a car in college was walking past an alleyway where a driver had ignored the stop sign.
