Among my friends and family, I am known as ‘the person who brings the onion dip.’ But that doesn’t mean I only make one kind of onion dip… heck no! There are countless onion dips to be enjoyed in this great wide world! There are cool and creamy French onion dips, there are ones with four types of onions… and I love them all. But I especially love this Hot Onion Dip, where five simple ingredients are baked until bubbling and irresistible. Add it to your onion dip rotation!

Just Five Ingredients

It’s true. You only need five things to make this dip.

One, is an onion. I like a yellow onion here, as the flavor is just a tad sweeter than a white onion.

Then you need: mayo, cream cheese, Swiss cheese, Parmesan cheese. That’s it! (And maybe a pinch of salt.)

Easy Method

Here is the nice thing: You don’t have to saute, caramelize, or pre-cook the onions in any way. You are just going to stir together the five ingredients, get them in a baking dish, and bake. That’s it. Easy, right?

I like to prepare the onion by cutting it into quarters and then thinly slicing it. This way, when you dip, you get a manageable slender sliver of onion rather than an aggressive chunk or a very long strand that hangs from your cracker. (Or other dipping device. Melba toasts work great here.)

Possible Swaps

If you like the flavor of sweet onions, you could swap the onion for a sweet variety like Vidalia or Walla Walla. Just as simple of a dip, but with a different sweet and savory flavor profile.

If you really like sweet onions, you could take the time to caramelize your onions before mixing them with the other ingredients. Just get them in a pan with some olive oil over medium-low heat and cook slowly until they’ve turned, well, caramel colored.

If you need some spice, a little pinch of cayenne or a dash of tabasco is a great addition here.
