With borders of buttercream and candles galore, the birthday cake isn’t truly a birthday cake without a message. Here, this baker and cake decorator shows that cursive can be cool with this distinct writing.

Looking back at birthday cake messages from the past, the lettering on most cakes nowadays can’t compare. Messages on today’s cakes look like chicken scratch or the scrappy words of a ransom letter. And no, you aren’t crazy, writing styles have changed. Since 2010 the US government removed cursive as a core requirement for K through 12 learning. The result? Future generations won’t know how to write with a sense of old-school elegance.

Maybe it’s an antiquated writing system, but this cake decorator, Hans Westermark, is bringing back script.

On his TikTok, he makes a variety of cake and baking videos, but his most popular videos are the ones when he writes out birthday salutations.

His way of writing happy birthday in cursive takes it to the next level. A series of loops starts off with the letter H. Next, Hans pulls the lines down, to the left, across, to the right, and then further down. This looping connection makes the H and B intertwined in an elegant lacing of lines. The rest of the lettering is angled for an eye-pleasing message.

Put the video on replay a few times, and you too can get this message written on a cake. The trick? Don’t press the icing into the cake, let the icing flow from the tip.
