Bowl or plate? Which is your preferred method of dining?
If you’re like me, you’ve probably got a cupboard stacked with varieties of both. But these days, minimalism is a growing trend. Less is more, right? And why not let your kitchen get in on some of that downsizing action?

But if your kitchen cupboards are going to get a makeover, why not go for the latest dinnerware hybrid that is all the hype?
Introducing the blate – a cross between a bowl and a plate. These combinations have been gaining a lot of attention online, as they mix the best of both dinnerware items. They’ve got the surface area of a plate, but also the protective lip of a bowl so your food stays on the blate. But besides being functional, they’re also stylish as they’re quite sleek to look at.
I always enjoy a good blate https://t.co/kSaK0IIjdk

Of course, you might be looking at these items and wondering why there is such a hype. Plates have been around for far longer and do the same job. However, blates seem to be the dark horse of the dinnerware scene, gaining a cult following on social media – where their name originated.
In fact, on Twitter back in March 2021, a random tweet about “normalizing blates” ended up going viral and gaining more than 2,300 likes!
We need to normalize blates (bowl plates)!!!! Im tired of my food falling off the edge!!! I want a plate with raised sides! NORMALIZE BLATES!

It seems that after that particular tweet, there was no stopping the increase in attention that they began to receive. Food and lifestyle articles about the humble blate became ever more prevalent. Plus, there was a TikTok specifically dedicated to the practicality and function of the blate. The TikTok video got more than 95,000 likes, with the maker of the TikTok asking the all important question: “Why do we even have plates?”
A good question, indeed! What do you think? Are you more of a plates or bowls kind of person? Do you use blates in your home? Let us know!
