Parents who have done their share of partying in the past can attest to the fact that there are always new and interesting drinking trends that the kids are going to latch onto.
There is not much you can do about it as a parent, especially if you have a child who is of drinking age. Now, the Borg drinking trend is here and parents are doing all they can to research it.
No, it has nothing to do with Star Trek, in case you are wondering. The trend is easy enough to understand once you take a moment to look into it.
College students who are into binge drinking college students have come up with something that they are calling the “black out rage gallon.” This is where the “borg” acronym is derived from, in case you did not know.
The borg is whipped up with the usage of a gallon jug. These jugs incorporate equal parts water and vodka. From there, the students are looking to add a “flavor enhancer” to make it taste a bit better. They are using caffeinated liquids like Mio Energy and some are also tacking on powdered electrolytes. Just wait until you see the video from the this University of Texas at Austin student.
She goes by the handle @bellaaalonzo on TikTok and she is here to show us how it is done.
The video has already gotten over 2 million views since it was posted back in January. The idea behind the borg is a simple one: You are supposed to be able to drink heavily, without all of the side effects that are normally associated with alcohol.
The idea has gained a lot of steam since the pandemic began as well. This makes a lot of sense since most people are not going to want to be sharing drinks. Of course, people are even coming up with special names for their borgs. “SpongeBorg” might be our favorite but we are also very partial to “Ron Borgundy.”

Harm reduction is the name of the game here.
“When it comes to substance use prevention, harm reduction recognizes that people are going to make their own decisions when it comes to alcohol and other drugs,” says Erin Monroe. She’s a TikTok creator who has credentials in the world of substance abuse prevention.

Meanwhile, there are others who still find the trend to be dangerous. Parents, be sure to educate your children! This sounds scary from where we are sitting.
