Every so often in the fast-food world, there is a food item that is so tasty but then it gets removed from rotation.

McDonald’s has the elusive McRib, and Taco Bell has Nacho Fries. Nacho Fries are one of the menu items made with potato that is seasoned with taco spices and then served with warm nacho cheese. They’re an absolute comfort after a rough day at work. However, as of last month, January 2022, the fries will be discontinued from all Taco Bell locations.

The sad part is, the fries were quite a popular menu item so it doesn’t make sense that Taco Bell would do this. Why not keep them available all the time?

Well, it all comes down to business strategy. As Business Insider reports, back in 2018 when the fries were launched, there were 53 million orders between January and April as people rushed to get the items before they went away. The fries’ introduction was so popular, they even surpassed the famous Doritos Locos Taco in terms of sales success.

In fact, according to Business Insider, back in 2018, a spokesperson for the company, Matt Prince, stated, “We’re seeing fries in one out of every three orders, compared to one out of every four for [Doritos Locos Taco].”

Since then, they’ve been on a periodic revival across the country at different Taco Bell locations. Their last appearance was in July of 2021 when they were in high demand because of their previous absence. But that is how supply and demand works. When the supply is low the demand becomes high so there is usually always a buzz around them – even when they’re not in the stores they’re still being talked about on social media. And when they finally come back, the sales go through the roof.

It is a business model quite similar to that of McDonald’s and their McRib sandwich, which is now only ever on a limited-time run in certain places. But for now, the question remains if and when will Taco Bell bring back its Nacho Fries. What do you think? Let us know!
