This is one of the most mortifying videos that we have ever seen. In fact, we have secondhand embarrassment on this man’s behalf.
Ross Bamber, 26, even posted the footage on TikTok. He is a better man than we are. We would have taken this one to the grave. Water torture would not have gotten this one out of us. At least he’s a good sport if nothing else.
This British man was looking to pull off a classic lakeside proposal. There was just one problem: The engagement ring had other ideas. The $1,200 diamond engagement ring took a flying leap out of the box when he opened it and flew into the water. This has to be one of the most helpless moments that a person can possibly experience.
The bungled proposal to Geri Ashforth, 23, took place on June 15. The clip went viral because of course it did. How could anyone resist watching and sharing something so hilarious? It’s the classic situation where you feel bad for the person who is involved but you cannot help but laugh. At least Ross and Geri seem to be taking the whole thing in stride.
“I heard it bounce, and thought, ‘Please, that can’t possibly be the ring…’ – my heart dropped,” said Geri in a recent BBC interview. Friends were contacted and they tried their best to find the ring themselves. However, their usage of goggles was to no avail. Near as they could tell, the ring was gone and there was nothing that could be done about it.
“I literally couldn’t believe it,” Bamber told SWNS, according to the New York Post. “I didn’t even manage to get down on one knee. I took the ring out of my pocket and as I opened the box the ring fell out. It bounced a couple of times and then fell between the gaps of the decking.”
That’s got to be even more heartbreaking. He went to great lengths to put together an amazing proposal but the fates did not cooperate.
“Geri was quite upset about the whole thing,” Bamber continued. “She said to me when I dropped it ‘Tell me that wasn’t what I thought it was.’ I was like ‘Yes it was, I’m so sorry,’ and she said she didn’t want to look or even open her eyes.”
