5-Ingredient Homemade Bisquick Mix

It seriously couldn’t be easier!

We faithfully used store-bought Bisquick mix for many years, until it occurred to us that we already had all the ingredients in our kitchens to make it ourselves. We’re all for paying a slightly higher price for something we can’t make or for something that would take a lot more time and effort to make, but thinking about it, we wondered why we were paying more in this instance for a mix that we could easily whip up on our own.

It made no sense, so we switched over to mixing up our own Bisquick mix and we never looked back! This stuff is so easy, you already have at most of the ingredients, and you can use it in a huge variety of ways – add some eggs or milk and you’ve got biscuits, pancakes, coffee cakes, etc We can’t get enough of it, and you’ll be glad you’ve got a stash on hand for when the cravings hit!!

Makes approximately 40 oz. (same as 1 box Bisquick)

  • 1 cup vegetable shortening, cut into cubes or spoonfuls
  • 4 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar, optional

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar (if using) and salt, and toss together.
  2. Drop shortening into dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter to cut it in.
  3. Continue using your pastry cutter (or two forks) to blend mixture together until it resembles small pebbles. Note: you could combine everything together in the food processor if you want.
  4. Transfer mixture to an air-tight container and store, refrigerated, for up to 3 months.
