Vanity license plates can be funny, if you are asking us. Yes, they can get a bit juvenile at times but there’s nothing wrong with that. They are a great way for some of us to allow our inner child to thrive. The truly silly ones always manage to get a laugh out of us, which is what makes this story such a funny one.
This North Carolina woman thought she had a license plate for the ages but the state seems to disagree with her on that. Her license plate said “FARTSM” and as you can imagine, it has been quite a hit.
The “SM” in the license plate stands for Smoky Mountains. The Charlotte Observer has been covering this story and it is a hilarious one.
Asheville resident and software developer Karly Sindy finds herself embroiled in one of the most ridiculous controversies that we have seen in some time. The plate was issued last fall, at her request. She’s had a lot of fun with it and she assumed that everyone else would feel the same way. Some people are not nearly as tickled as the rest of us, though.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Sindy said, “A lot of times, I come up to my car and someone’s taking a picture of it. And people driving by will give me a huge thumbs-up. And I have a 7-year-old daughter and I pick her up at school—it’s the most popular truck, the fart truck.”
We are surprised that fully grown adults are having such a problem with this, though. The DMV actually got a complaint from someone about the vanity plate, claiming that it was in poor taste.
The DMV gave her the chance to write in and explain why the plate was personally meaningful to her. She and her friends brainstormed, coming up with a fake organization called Friends of Asheville Recreational Trails, or FART for short.
The agency was not as amused, though. According to the DMV, these license plates are on the “do not issue” list, so this mother was not even supposed to get one in the first place. Most states have these lists, which are designed to keep people from being able to get profane plates (but serve as a massive buzzkill, if you are asking us).
