The FDA is currently investigating five reported cases of Salmonella contamination from individuals who reported eating cake mix prior to becoming sick. From the FDA, “Several of the individuals reported consuming a cake mix at some point prior to becoming ill, and some may have also consumed these products raw and not baked. Consumers are reminded not to consume any raw batter.”
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. Though healthy individuals often recover after 4–7 days, the risk of a potentially lethal infection increases for the young, elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
The FDA goes on to advise: Consumers with questions should call our Consumer Care team at 1-888-299-7646, open 9 am through 5 pm EST, Monday through Friday or visit Duncan Hines website for more information.
