Waffle House is always there when you need them, aren’t they? These restaurants are well known for being open around the clock, even during the times when others are closed. Unfortunately, Waffle House has been forced to close down hundreds of locations because of the coronavirus pandemic. Did you know that there is actually a “Waffle House Index” that measures such things?

Now that hundreds of restaurants have had to close, the Waffle House Index is at code red. Their Twitter account has been keeping followers up to date on the latest closings. At the current moment, over 400 restaurants have had to close. Meanwhile, there are still over 1,500 that remain operational. While the chain is typically considered a southern staple, there are locations all over the country.

This Index serves as an unofficial measurement of United States disasters. Because these restaurants are associated with the south, they are prepared for any sort of natural disaster that comes their way. Hurricanes and tornadoes have nothing on Waffle House! This is one restaurant that knows how to tough it out when times are starting to get hard.

The green dots on the index indicate restaurants that are still servicing customers and the yellow dots are indicative of limited menus due to low power or supplies. This may all seem silly to you, but the Federal Emergency Management Agency (also known as FEMA) will even use the Waffle House Index as a point of reference. This lets them know which areas are most in need of special attention during a natural disaster.

If even one Waffle House location is forced to shut down, it is considered to be a significant event. With over 400 restaurants already going red, it appears that the coronavirus pandemic is going to get worse before it has a chance to get better. Waffle House is doing everything in their power to make sure that their customers remain safe as the coronavirus pandemic places our normal daily routines on pause.

Would you like to keep up with the Waffle House locations in your area? If so, be sure to follow the official Waffle House Twitter account. The Index is updated as often as necessary so that you have a clearer picture of what is going on. Pay close attention to all of the restaurants in your area and monitor the closings closely. Hopefully, the virus will soon run its course and we can return to some semblance of normalcy.
