Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Benjamin Olson is a two-year-old boy who loves to spend time with new people. While this story may come as a surprise to some, those who have little ones at home are not going to be shocked at all.

As it turns out, Benjamin has a pretty cool neighbor who is more than happy to be his new pal. She’s none other than 99-year-old Mary O’Neill!

These two may not have seemed too compatible, but when the world shut down, all they had was each other and the hole in their shared fence. This is when they began to strike up their kinship.

The world was stuck indoors but these two pals decided that they were going to make the best of it.

Can you believe that they came up with their own game that they played through the fence? It’s called “cane ball” and it looks like an absolute blast, near as we can tell.

KARE 11 shared, “‘Cane Ball’ is one of the made-up games 2-year-old Benjamin Olson and 99-year-old Mary O’Neill play across their backyard fences. The two became best friends when both were stuck at home during the pandemic and still play nearly every day.”

We are glad to hear that this friendship is still living on, even as the pandemic starts to wane. You would think that a 2-year-old boy and a woman who is on the verge of turning 100 years old would have very little in common, but their relationship is thriving.

Kudos to these two for being able to forge such a strong connection in the midst of all the madness that we have been dealing with. Watch the video below to learn more about their sweet story:
