Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

It’s no secret that we love decorating for Christmas. We also love shopping for ornaments. However, it’s not always in the budget to browse the aisles of our favorite boutiques, especially this time of year. Sure, we can always wait till after the holidays and grab up ornaments and decor on clearance, but we want new ornaments and we want them now! Good thing we found some awesome ideas on upgrading dollar store ornaments. That’s right in our budget! Go ahead and check out these creative ways to transform dollar store ornaments.

Christmas Tissue Ornament

Go ahead and pick up some festive tissue paper while you’re at the dollar store for this fun and easy DIY. Simply cut out different shapes or phrases, cover the ornament with a layer of Mod Podge, and stick your tissue paper on. Keep in mind you may have to do a few layers, depending on the color of the ornament and the kind of tissue paper you get. Then, add another thin layer of Mod Podge to seal it up, and hang your new ornament once it’s dry!

Faux Knit Ornament

This is such a fun idea! We love the handmade, knit look, but we don’t have the skill or patience to knit something like this ourselves. Grab a knit hat from the dollar store (or use an old one if it’s not gross), and cut it up. Then hot glue on your pieces in a way that fits your preferences. That’s it! Much easier than learning how to knit, don’t you think?

Silver Leaf Ornament

We absolutely love this idea! Think about all the possibilities. Red ornament with silver, greed with gold, white with red, gold with silver, the list goes on and on. Don’t these look super classy? For this, you’ll need an ornament, Mod Podge, and some shiny leaf paper you can find at any craft store for cheap. Paint on a layer of Mod Podge, wrap your ornament with the leaf paper, and use a soft bristle brush, like a toothbrush, to rub the paper on. Remove the paper and watch your plain, boring ornament transform into a shiny, elegant ornament!

Bejeweled Ornament

Here’s a classic project that’s made even easier with stick-on jewels. The kiddos would love to get in on this action! Switch it up by getting a few different colors, and then let the kids go to town making beautiful, bejeweled ornaments.

Snow Ornament

Here’s another elegant ornament idea. Grab a silver ball, sparkles optional, and cover in a layer of Mod Podge. Then, simply sprinkle some fake snow on it and let the ornament dry! Sure, this one might not last year after year, as the snow will likely flake away once stored, but it’s a super easy way to add a pop of sparle and snow to your tree this year!
