Spirit Airlines Bans Man For Exposing ‘Free Carry-On’ Hack

He ended up getting banned from using the airline for a minimum of two years.

Although flying has always been a very convenient way to get from one place to another, it has also been a hassle in more ways than one. That is especially true now that the pandemic has added another layer of ridiculousness to getting on board.

When you make it to the airport and get through all of the security and safety measures, you then run the risk of having your flight postponed, or perhaps the plane you are on is going to be swapped. The airlines are going to argue that they are doing it for your good, but they will be hesitant to offer you a refund in most cases. In other words, you take all of the risks without any of the rewards.

Sometimes, we just want a break and that is what one TikTok user had to offer. He had something to offer, but in the end, he paid a price for it.

It all had to do with Spirit Airlines, a business that is known for saving their traveling customers money. Of course, after you pay a low price for a ticket, you are going to have to pay a lot of extras. This could include getting a specific seat on the flight or perhaps paying extra for the bag you bring to the airport.

Spirit Airlines takes care of thousands of people on a daily basis so they don’t always stop to check every detail on the itinerary. @robkallday is a TikTok user that discovered a way around the system so that you could bring a carry-on bag and not pay extra for it.

It is a fairly simple option, although most people would overlook it. You take a screenshot of your boarding pass, use a photo editing application, and change the value of ‘0’ into a ‘1’ under the boarding pass section. When somebody checks your pass, they would actually have to verify by looking at your application or email to make sure that you can legitimately carry that bag on for free.

The video was shared on TikTok and I’m sure that Rob was quite proud of himself as millions of people started watching the video. The problem is, Spirit didn’t care much for the revelation so they sent Rob a letter and he posted that to the social media platform as well. He ended up getting banned from using the airline for a minimum of two years.

The letter reads in part: “As you know you created a video on the social media platform ‘TikTok’ showing users how to manipulate a Spirit Airlines boarding pass and fraudulently indicate they paid for a carry-on bag to the financial detriment of Spirit Airlines. Additionally, as evidenced in the video’s comments, you have also been advising users specifically on what cell phone application should download to carry out the scam.”

The letter also said that he could not enter a Spirits Airlines plane, and if he did, law enforcement officials would be called. If he placed an order, it would be canceled and no refunds would be given. According to the airline, he would be able to fly Spirit within two years, but he had to write a letter to the airline saying he would “conduct [himself] appropriately.”

Rob was amused at the letter he got from the “bunch of babies.” He also shared it online but said he didn’t go through with their request. Other people on TikTok were amused with the threat and no one was thinking it was all that serious. They were taking stabs at the airline.

Some people also said that Spirit would scan the boarding passes at the airport, and that indicates if they are able to bring a carry-on. You may want to think twice before trying this hack for yourself.
