Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Anyone who enjoys a home-cooked meal has probably experienced the pain that comes with cooking with onions. Far too often, these delicious bulbs end up burning our eyes or making us outright cry. But one TikTok user is about to change all that.

TikTok user @cerealeatingghost has a way to prevent your eyes from burning when chopping onions, and it doesn’t involve holding a metal spoon in your mouth or wearing ski goggles.

All you need to do is grab a wet paper towel and leave it on the cutting board. Then, proceed to handle your onion as usual. The paper towel works to soak up all of the onions’ acid and makes life much easier for all parties involved.

Evidently, the acid from the onions is drawn to a water source. By drawing them towards the wet paper towel, you are doing your part to keep them away from your tear ducts, which is what the onions’ acid is attracted to.

Based on the comments, it seems that people are having a fair amount of success with this tip. Some have reported that their eyes still stung once they used the wet paper towel, but others had success, so it’s definitely worth trying.
