When this teacher shared their drawing of poppies on a red card for his class, he never could have expected what would end up happening next.

The debate began once the teachers shared that his outlines of the flowers appeared to overlap. However, the lines do not actually touch, which only served to make the debate even more heated.

It is easy to see why. Optical illusions like this one are always tearing the internet apart. The image of a dozen poppies was shared to Reddit by the teacher, who goes by the name SlipperyPockets on the popular site.

“I drew poppy outlines for my class to cut out — they look like they overlap but don’t,” he explained. The first glance can definitely be deceiving, especially in this instance.

These poppies, which are being worn so that observers can show their support on the days leading up to Remembrance Sunday, appear to be overlapping on first look. The post got a massive response on Reddit, as people wanted answers.

Thousands of commentators wanted answers and we can fully understand why. This is one of the most confusing illusions that we have seen in some time.

“AAAHHH! What is this sorcery? I look away and they overlap, then I look at it and they’re separate! It makes my brain tingle,” one commentator said and we could not agree more. How on earth is this even possible?

As it turns out, the illusion can be attributed to what is known as gestalt continuity law. This refers to how our brain sees lines of visual elements that are grouped together.

After allowing the internet to run wild for a few days, the teacher finally revealed that the poppies were being used for a wreath that is made being made in honor of Remembrance Day. It feels like the internet throws a different optical illusion at us every single day at this time but we will always rise to the challenge.
