Shipping containers aren’t just for transporting goods from one side of the world to another. As some architects have shown, they have the potential for creating very cool creations. And they’re not basic either. One home, known as a “Starburst” home, hasn’t even been built yet, but it already hitting the market at a whopping $3.5 million.
Situated right by Joshua Tree National Park, the multi-million dollar home is the creation of Whitaker Studio, a firm based out of London. Whitaker Studio has announced that they plan to start construction in 2021. The home is designed to look like an exploding star by arranging the shipping containers in a distinct pattern. And after seeing the design renderings, we totally get why the name “Starburst” was chosen.
As reported by Business Insider, Whitaker Studio was commissioned by movie producer Chris Hanley. However, the idea behind “Starburst” started years ago. According to Simplemost, a press release shared that James Whitaker had been asked by some friends to use a stack of wooden blocks to envision an advertising agency office. And that is how Starburst was originally envisioned as an office building back in 2010. The office building project never ended up going through in the end. But then Hanley, who likes fantastical architecture, decided to bring the project to life in some land that is located quite close to the desert national park.
The planned project will be 2,000 square feet in size when completed and will have three bedrooms, plus a kitchen and a living room. The entire exterior part of the home will be created out of shipping containers. But perhaps the coolest feature of the home will be the fact that it is built in a gorgeous location that is surrounded by stunning views of rock formations, mountains, and basins. The design of the home certainly allows plenty of viewing opportunities from within the house.
As the real estate firm, Engel & Volkers Santa Monica, wrote in their listing, the location is “ideal for stargazing, horses and those who seek tranquility for their spiritual, meditation or yoga practices.”
As for the design firm themselves, they have noted that the different containers themselves all have been “orientated to maximize views across the landscape, control light entering the house or to use the topography to provide privacy.” Sounds absolutely picturesque.
Lastly, the home does come with a car garage that is fitted with solar panels which will also provide solar power for the home itself. The reason that the price is so high at $3.5 million is to cover the cost of construction.
