Apples are one of the best parts of the fall season. We love all of the different varieties and flavors that are popping up in our grocery store. Of course, this has inspired us to bake, because there’s nothing better than the smell of warm sweet apples baking in our oven. We decided to whip up a delicious apple crumble for dessert and boy did it really shine. The best part is that the kids were able to get into the kitchen and help make the crumble topping. This rustic and simple dessert is an absolute treasure and it’s so easy to make!

Choose whatever apple you like, there are so many different apples to choose from so go with what your family enjoys eating. Apples, when baked, naturally taste sweeter, so add as much sugar as suits your particular apple’s flavor. We just peel and dice the apples and toss them with a little cinnamon-sugar-ginger mixture. The ginger is a nice little addition, with the just the right amount of spice and warmth to add subtle flavor. As big of a role as the apples play in this dish, one essential character is this crumble topping. We especially love the addition of coarsely chopped walnuts to the crumble topping mixture (totally optional). The nuttiness pairs beautifully with the apples and spices, and of course the brown sugar!

Baking doesn’t have to be an epic project. Some of our favorite sweet treats require just a handful of ingredients and really simple techniques, so we can enjoy a homebaked goodie with very little effort. Elaborate desserts are a real treat, but sometimes the most rustic and simple baked goods are the most enjoyable. We whipped up this warm apple crumble on a cold and rainy weeknight and it was just what everyone needed to feel warm and cozy. For added indulgence, top it with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or cool whipped cream. But it’s darn delicious on its own!
