Ingredients
  • 2 cups canned great northern or navy beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 4 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon treacle syrup or molasses (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 cups chicken stock
  • 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons cornstarch (optional)
  • Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
Preparation
  1. In a large pot add all of the ingredients except the cornstarch. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Bring to a boil reduce to a simmer, stirring frequently to prevent the beans from sticking to the bottom. Cook for about 20 minutes.
  3. If you are adding cornstarch, whisk the cornstarch with 1 to 2 tablespoons of water and whisk it into the beans. Cook for an additional 5 minutes or until it starts to thicken.
  4. Serve immediately over hot buttered toast, enjoy!
