Ingredients
  • 12 slices white bread
  • 6 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 egg yolks (or 2 whole eggs), beaten
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
Preparation
  1. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Arrange six slices of bread in the bottom of a greased baking dish.
  3. Top each piece of bread with a slice of cheese.
  4. Place a slice of bread on top of each cheese slice to make "sandwiches."
  5. Whisk together egg yolks or eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and mustard, and pour over sandwiches.
  6. Chill in refrigerator until bread has softened, then bake until golden brown on top, 1 hour.
