After a certain age, being an adult really just means that we’re always looking for the next big cleaning hack. With many of us living in modern homes and owning modern kitchen appliances, it’s safe to assume that we’ve all got a lot of stainless steel in our lives.

Stainless steel is one of those surfaces that looks best shiny, not full of greasy smudges and fingerprints. Granted, keeping stainless steel as clean and shiny as possible requires a lot of work.

But there might be a useful hack that involves a clean microfiber cloth, some olive oil, and a lot more elbow grease. Using olive oil might sound a little counterproductive, but apparently, it is a great way to help keep your stainless steel appliances grime and fingerprint-free.

According to the hack, you just need to add a few drops of the oil to your microfiber cloth and then buff your stainless steel. But it is important to pay close attention to the grain – whether it is horizontal or vertical – and then buff in the direction with the grain.

Here is where the elbow grease comes in. You’re supposed to keep buffing until all the smudges are gone and any surface scratches are filled in. Once finished, you’ll be left with a very thin layer of oil that is resistant to future fingerprints.

Best still, the clean-up is rather easy too as you just need to throw the microfiber cloth into your next wash cycle and then line dry.

So, how often should you try this trick with olive oil? Well, at least once a month.
